About Us :: The Name "Bipedal"
In pre-history, our upright posture and two-legged gait, and hence our ability to carry and use tools was the key feature that separated humans from other large brained mammals such as the apes. Being able to carry our tools from place to place meant it became worthwhile investing in the time and skills to make those tools increasingly sophisticated, and acquiring expertise in their use. With the development of clever tools and survival techniques came success in finding food and adapting to different environmental conditions. Along with it too came the development of a culture and communication skills which passed on the knowledge, skills, tools, techniques and processes to feed, clothe and nurture themselves and one another. Over the eons this culture created language, deeper environmental understanding, specialisation and trade, so gradually our brains became larger to cope with the increasing demands and complexity of life. Thus was born and fostered a culture of learning and knowledge that was shared between individuals and tribes and passed on through the generations, increasing our success, to arrive ultimately at our modern civilisation. Our civilisation today has the greatest capacity to communicate, learn, develop, transfer knowledge, understand and create value, and trade all as a direct result of being Bipedal.
